I must say, there is something special about sitting on top of a volcano in flip-flops, watching the sunset and eating ice cream.
Now, let me hit you up with some history
The island is what remains after an enormous volcanic eruption that took place about 3600 years ago. It's formed like a crescent around the volcano so you can basically see from one end to the other. Here is a good photo of the island from above.
What you see in my photos was formerly one single island that imploded. Santorini, then Thera, was later covered with a thick layer of ash. The explosion most likely also led to the demise of the Minoan civilisation on Crete. A huge tsunami hit the island after the Santorini eruption and caused severe damage.
No bodies and almost no valuables have been found on Santorini which leads to think that the people tried to escape by sea but drowned with their belongings when the tsunami hit them. What's left is art, furniture and pottery which tells us a bit about the people who lived there. The only gold object found on the island is the ibex below. A popular theory suggests that Santorini actually is the source to the Atlantis legend.
"Fun" fact.
One day during our stay smoke came out from the volcano which made me feel a bit uneasy...
